My grandfather was pastor of Mount Moriah. Mahalia Jackson actually started singing there. At the time a lot of pastors were saying that Mahalia was singing the devil’s music, because she had that blues influence. My grandfather was always behind her one hundred percent. She used to roll into town in a big old pink Cadillac and come have dinner with us. One time she sang at our church for a TV show with me in the choir backing her up.
