I’ve never considered this home. This was the place where I was raised, so it is home in one sense. But my true home is my soul, my spirit. As long as I can stay in touch with that, I’m home. Because when you leave this place, your soul is the only thing you take with you. Growing up I always thought I’d be an astronaut, explore the universe, step beyond the boundaries of the Earth. It really broke my heart when I found out that I was too tall. Then in ’85 I heard Coltrane’s Love Supreme on WWOZ. I was like wow, this cat is out there, like in a whole different universe. That saxophone was like his rocket ship, but it wasn’t going to outer space, it was going to inner space, reaching into the depths of his soul. Once I got hit by the Trane, that was it. I guess you could say that I became a spiritual astronaut, out to explore my own universe...
