When I was a senior in high school, I did a paper on the similarities between Malcolm X and John Coltrane. Those were two very different cats, but they were both very focused on self-determination. Malcolm was dealing with it politically, controlling the apparatus that governed his life, and Trane was dealing with it culturally, taking control of the apparatus that governed his art. Throughout my life, I always saw myself playing the roles of both of those cats as a revolutionary...
