First time I rolled into New Orleans was 1971. I was traveling aournd the country in a van selling hippie jewlery. Back then the sidewalks were a paradise, no T-shirt shops and junk stores to compete with. I set up at the old flea market right next to a snake charmer with a cobra in a basket, and money just came from every direction. It was a real art scene back then, not like the redneck tourists we have now. I used to draw portraits of the tourists, then I started doing oil paintings of Elvis and Mother Theresa. I must have done thousands of portraits. It’s good to know that long after I’m gone my art is still gonna be around...
